Teakettle Sighs, Doesn't Scream

She is no one’s daughter tonight
sister to steam and burner smoke,

progeny of a careless design
and disappointed gaze.

Eventually, it will all come out
after the pressure is built unbearable

and under her, smooth glass stovetop
will be none the worse for wear.

Sad little sister with a narrowed neck
it’s not her fault. Allegedly,

whistle-stops just work like that,
muffle mouths, casual as teacosies.

Whoever made her this way must love
the sheen of unused sounds.
