Life with the roaches
If I can’t be the best it means I’m the very worst
person alive on this planet (and the next)
and the cockroaches that shelter in the cracks
of my mom’s adobe house are going to crunch
on my bones, nibble on pieces of my skin swept up into a dustpan
and then they will teach me how to live even after apocalypse
even after getting stepped on and flipped on my back
(my little legs and arms dancing with no purchase)
and those cockroaches will become my family
and my friends
my brothers
besties
and if I can’t be the best here
maybe I can be the worst in the cracks
scurrying with them
